Major General Spencer Beal Reid

MG Spencer Beal Reid, M.D., U.S. Army (Ret), age 80, died March 24, 2002. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on March 25, 1921, and was the son of Martha Beal and Walter Spencer Reid. He suffered from Alzheimer's Disease.

Major General Reid completed premedical education at the University of California, Berkley. He graduated George Washington University School of Medicine, Washington, D.C. in 1946. His internship at District of Columbia General Hospital was completed in 1947 and his residency in OB/GYN at Letterman General Hospital at the Presidio of San Francisco, CA in 1954.

His national societies and professional memberships include Fellow of American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, Phi Chi Medical Fraternity, Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, Association of the United States Army, the Society of Medical Consultants to the Armed Forces, the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Medical Directors.

Among his many decorations are the Army Commendation Medal with Second Oak Leaf Cluster, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Service Medal, the Knight Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. He received many civilian decorations among which are The George Washington University Alumni Achievement Award, the Society of Medical Consultants to the Armed Forces, EUROMED (Nato Organization of Surgeons General), Honorary degree from US Army/Baylor University Program in Health Care Administration and listing in "Who's Who in America".

Among his many assignments are General Medical Officer 130th Station Hospital, Heidelberg, Germany; Chief Obstetrics and Gynecology, US Army Hospital, Ft. Campbell, KY; Division Surgeon 1ST Cavalry Division, Korea; Chief OB/GYN U.S. Army Hospital, Ft. Ord, CA; Commanding General, Madigan Army Medical Center, Tacoma, WA; Deputy Commander, Director of Professional Services, Director of Medical Education, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C.; Commanding General U.S. Army Medical Command, Europe; Chief Surgeon for all U.S. Forces, Europe.

Upon retirement from the U.S. Army Medical Corps he was Medical Director and Vice President of INA and Ross Loos Health Plans, Los Angeles, CA; Executive Vice President and Corporate Medical Director of CIGNA Healthplan, Inc., Dallas, TX.

His survivors include his wife, Jane Milburn Reid of 32 years; his daughters, Clarissa Milburn Reid Owen and Claudia Reid Ravin; his sons, William Spencer Reid, Peter James Reid, and Thomas Goodrich Reid.

He left 9 grandsons, Elias and Reid Ravin, Spencer, Peter and Andrew Reid, John and James Reid, Carson and Logan Reid; sister, Marilyn Reid Martin; and brother, Richard Reid, DDS of CA.

GRAVESIDE SERVICE WEDNESDAY 2:30 P.M. FORT SAM HOUSTON NATIONAL CEMETERY With full military honors. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association. Arrangements with Porter Loring Mortuary.
