Death Notice of Major Eddy

  • From The Leader : souvenir of the departure of the Victorian contingent to the Transvaal, Oct. 28th. 1899, The Infantry Unit Officers:
    • Major George Albert Eddy, who is to command the contingent, is a permanently employed officer. He received his first commission in July, 1885, in the Ballarat (3rd) Batallion Infantry, was promoted to captain in November, 1887, and three years later transferred to the Rangers as permanent adjutant of the regiment. He rose to the rank of major in April, 1897, and was appointed second in command of the regiment. Last year he was sent to England by the Government to go through a course of instruction, which he did with success, besides going through the qualifying examination for a captain in the Imperial army. Major Eddy is a keen, smart officer, and takes a warm interest in his regiment and his work generally. He is endowed with a fine physique and his ample frame may afford the Boers a margin for deviation; but he would be well able to reply if he chose to try the range for himself, being a very good rifle shot, and amongst the first flight of marksmen in this colony. He is 39 years of age.
