He fought in the Peninsular War (1807-1814) with the Military General Service Medal issued to him in 1847 for military service from 1793 to 1814.
The Peninsular Medal was issued retrospectively by Queen Victoria on 1 June 1847 for 29 battles or actions encompassing the French Revolutionary Wars, the Napoleonic Wars and the Anglo-American War spanning from 1793-1814.
Major Henry Edward O'Dell's medal has nine clasps for the nine battles he fought in; Busaco, Fuentes D'Onor, Cuidad Rodrigo, Badajoz, Salamanca, Vittoria, Pyrenees, Nivelle and Nive. He was wounded at the Battle of Salamanca.
In 1815 he was ordered home due to injuries received at Salamanca.
