"The first grist mill in Clearfield County was built by Matthew Ogden on Moose Creek, near Clearfield, about 1804. Before Matthew Ogden built his mill, Daniel, the father, had to go to Lock Haven to get grinding done, using a canoe on the river to make the trip, and when meal was low, he used an old jointer plane turned bottom up, and by drawing an ear of corn along the surface, managed to manufacture a sufficient quantity of meal to supply the family demand."

Matthew, Son of Daniel Ogden, Jr. & Eleanor Scoutien. He was married June 30, 1802 in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania to Elizabeth Bloom, daughter of William Bloom and Mary Mettler. Matthew and Elizabeth were the parents of 17 children, 14 of whom lived to adulthood.
