About Major Samuel Adams, Sr.

Samuel Adams was the second oldest of eight children all born in Sandisfield, Mass to Samuel Adams (1737-1809) and Sarah Clark Adams (1739-1818). Almost all his siblings remained in Sandisfield, but both Samuel and his elder brother Darius served in the war. Following the war, then "Major" Samuel returned to Sandisfield where he married Amy Bosworth (1761-1802) in 1786, and his son Darius was born the following year. The 1879 History of Cayuga County, New York reports that he moved to Cayuga County in 1796, first to Genoa, and then to Northville (today called "King Ferry"). On his first wife's death in 1802, he married Elinor Cutter (1764-1838), also of Sandisfield, with whom he had a son Augustus. The History reports that he died in Geauga County while on a visit to Ohio in 1817. (p. 491)

Samuel Adams' brother Darius, born in Sandisfield the year before Samuel, was killed at the Battle of Monmouth in 1778.

Preliminary research from Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolution suggests that Samuel (like his brother Darius) enlisted as a private, in 1777 and again in 1779. In 1780 he raised a company of men from Sandisfield for six months service in the Continental Army, with a payroll supported by the Town of Sandisfield. (see vol. 1 p.74) This action may have given him the rank of Major.
