Bruceville, Indiana was named for Major William Bruce. The Major came from Kentucky in 1805 and lived for a time in Vincennes. Then, a short time later, he bought 200 acres and built a cabin where Bruceville is located now. William Bruce was married two times and was the father of 25 children, 15 by his first wife, Sallie Polke Bruce, and 10 by his second, Hettie Holmes Bruce. He died on April 23, 1854.
