About Malcolm Roberts Macfarlane

Malcolm Roberts Macfarlane (1944 - 1999)

Brief overview:

Malcolm (54), was shot dead when two assailants broke into his home on the farm, on 3rd October 1999.

A week later, Bruce Mack (28), a farmer, and son of farmer David Mack, was shot dead at close range with a shotgun in an ambush on the family farm, in Highflats, KZN, on 11th October 1999.

Police arrested suspects in both cases. Bonile Mkhize (22) was alleged to have been one of the triggermen during the attack on Bruce. The other man arrested was Mpekiswa Shezi, who allegedly gave the instructions for the murder to be carried out and took the firearms afterwards. They were kept in custody for several months, but were later released due to lack of evidence, after police shot dead a third suspect in May 2000. Two suspects were also arrested for the Macfarlane murder, but also released for lack of evidence against them.

Agri-SA's director of general services Kobus Visser said the number of attacks had increased to 769 in 1998 from 434 in 1997, and murders had jumped to 142 from 85 over the same period. During 1997 there were 813 attacks and 144 murders on farms, making farming statistically the most dangerous profession in the country.

Additional Biographical Information:

  • Media Report dated July 19th, 2015:
  • “A highly respected South Coast sportswoman, Thelma Pauline Smith (95), died recently and will be sorely missed by her family and her many friends. Born in England, the daughter of May Harcourt, Thelma was six years old when her father, Charles Roberts died, and she went to live with an aunt. After attending a finishing school in Switzerland she joined her mother at the Wilderness Hotel in South Africa. Her mother subsequently bought the Margate Hotel and South Coast Steam Laundry. At 17 Thelma Pauline Smith started nursing at Addington hospital. There she met Mollye Munro who remained her friend for the next 77 years. She was with Mollye at the Durban July when she met her first husband Albert Macfarlane from Ixopo. Four years later she married Stan Smith and moved to Uvongo with him. They took over the family’s South Coast laundry business. After Stan died, Thelma chose to stay in Uvongo. Tragedy struck again in 1999 when her son Malcolm was murdered on the family farm. Thelma never really recovered from this terrible blow."
