About Malissa / Melissa Barton

She is identified as Malissa or Melissa depending upon which record one is reading.

Born 10-28-1808, probably in Pendleton District, SC. At least one census identifies her as the sister of William S. Barton.

The following census may have no connection with Malissa Barton, but it is a close match for her possible family in both the genders and the ages of the individuals when compared to the 1830 Hall County, GA census. Census records were heavily dependent on who was giving the information so is a good guide, but not always totally accurate.

1820 Pendleton Dist., SC (P. 219)

Rebecca Barton

1m -10 [William?]

1m 16-18 [Willis?]

1m 18-26 [Joseph?]

1f -10 [Malissa? She would be 12 in 1820]

1f 45+ [Unknown female number 1--Rebecca?]

1f 45+ [Unknown female number 2--Or could this be Rebecca?]

Malissa was possibly living in the following household in the 1830 Hall Co., GA census:

1830 Federal Census for Hall Co., GA. (P. 95)

Rebecca Barton

1m 15-20 [William?]

1f 20-30 [Malissa? Malissa would be 22 years old in 1830.]

1f 50-60 [Unknown female #1--Rebecca?]

1f 90-100 [Unknown female #2--Or could this be Rebecca?]

1840 Census of Hall Co., GA (Page 29, GA Militia Dist., 403)

William Barton

1m -5 [Probably Andrew Jackson Barton]

1m -5 [Owen C.?]

1m 20-30 [William S. Barton]

1f 20-30 [Sarah Melissa (Harrington) Barton]

1f 30-40 [Malissa (sister of William?)]

1f 60-70 [Unknown female number 1 from 1830 census?]

1850: William was listed twice in this census. Malissa was enumerated in his household once. The second listing for William didn't include Malissa. Wonder where she was at? Could she have stayed in the previous home she lived in with William and family? Perhaps he moved into a new area not reached by the census taker yet which is why his family was entered twice.
