Aloha Mr. Renaud,
Mahalo for interest.
The object that you are inquiring about was part of a research project focusing on physical racial types/Eugenics conducted by Louis R. Sullivan. His findings were presented at the Second International Congress of Eugenics in October 1921. The museum received the 54 busts and 1 full figure from the American Museum of Natural History (New York City, New York) during the early 1920’s. The artist who created the plaster cast was George C. Usborne with support from University of Hawai’i, Punahou Schools and Kamehameha Schools. The 54 busts of people from the Hawaiian Islands of various ethnicities: Hawaiian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Portuguese, “American,” Filipino, and various mixtures of the aforementioned ethnicities. The 1 full figure is of a Native Hawaiian male.
For more information about Louis R. Sullivan’s research, please see Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum (press) Occasional Paper 1921, pp. 191.
