About Mamie Agnes Sawyer
Mamie and her brother George and sister Alma Lee were all orphaned by the time that Mamie was ten years old. George and Alma Lee were both adopted by families, because they were younger than Mamie, but the story goes that Mamie was considered too old to adopt. One of her nephews, Wendell McArthur (Son of Alma Lee) said that she had lived with several different families. There was also a story that she had lived with a Grandfather, which was true at least in 1910, when she was 16. She was listed on the 1910 Census as living with her maternal grandfather, George W. Cunningham, his second wife Sallie, and their two children Buford and Julia.--R. Woosley
