About Martina Borash
Wincenty Janta Lipinski and his wife Marcjanna (born Zmuda Trzebiatowska) Janta Lipinska (listed as Vincint Lipinski, 36yrs, and his wife Marianne, 32yrs) arrived in New York on 12 May, 1888, from Bremen, Germany, aboard the steamship Salier with children; Vincent (4yrs), Elisabeth (4yrs) & Cecilie (1yr).
The ship that carried the Janta Lipinski family, the Salier (built 1874, sank 1896), was an iron-construction, two-masted, one-stack streamship, about 40 feet wide and 350 feet long. It was part of the Norddeutschen Lloyd line (now Hapag-Lloyd). From 1880-1886, it travelled round-trip between Bremen and New York. Before then, it made the trip but stopped in Southhampton, England. After 1886, it travelled between Bremen and Australia, through the Suez Canal.
It could carry up to 142 first-class and 800 steerage passengers, with a crew of 80-103. It sank off the coast of Spain in 1896, with a loss of 280 lives.
