In 1870 census, Harriet (51, born NC, cannot read or write), with John (16 b. SC) and Calvin (12 b SC), are enumerated in the Notla community of Cherokee Co, NC. Also in household is Page Rena, age 31 white female, b. NC, no occupation. Where is Marcus?
Aha. He was probably on the run. On Sept 8, 1870, Governor William W. Holden of NC offered a $300 reward for the capture of Marcus Morrow and his son James A. Morrow for the murder of Jasper Vogle of Cherokee County, NC.
Even though reports such as on FindAGrave (below) said he killed his son-in-law, it appears that it was probably his brother-in-law, since Jasper Voyles (correct spelling of the name) was married to an Anna Morrow, and both were approximately the same age as Marcus Morrow, born 1817-1821. I suspect Anna Morrow was his sister.
From FindaGrave:
Birth: Mar. 3, 1818 Death: Sep. 8, 1876
They emigrated to Clay Co., ca. 1871 from Cherokee Co., NC. after he killed his son-in-law for wife beating. Their 2 sons, John L. and Calvin and one daughter Sophronia all went. Only Marcus's 2 daughters from a previous marriage stayed behind as they had married in NC.
(In 1880 both daughters were married and living next door to each other in Notla, Cherokee County, Georgia: Harry and Martha Anderson; Archibald and Arrena Ballew.)
