He was the head of a wagon train coming to California during gold rush days. Married Margaret Morrison(born 25 February 1819, Indiana, died 9 February 1902, Yolo county, California) Her parents were James Dickinson Morrison (1793-1870) and Lydia Lee (1798-1877).

Woodland Daily Democrat (Newspaper) - February 10, 1902, Woodland, California ESTABLISHED 1877 WOODLAND CALIFORNIA MONDAY EVENING FEBRUARY 10 1902 GRANDMA BLACK Her Long Unselfish Life Terminated Sunday [ He Was a Cook in E Perkins Hotel at Capay At Time of Death ] She Was the Only Pensioner of Blackhawk War in the State In her home in Blacks on the morning of Sunday February 9 1902 Grandma Black laid down the cross of life for her home beyond the river With her passing closed one of the longest and most eventful as well as the most beautiful of Christian lives Grandma Black was the only pensioner in the state ou account of the Blackhawk war i She was born in Indiana February 7 25 1819 Her maiden name was Margaret Morrison When she was still quite young her parents removed to where her girlhood days were spent and where she was educated At an early age she united with the Christian church and she was ever afterward a devout and consistent member of that denomination and active In church work On September the 16th 1834 in Scott county Illinois she was married to Thomas G Black In 18D2 herself and husband Joined a large party of emigrants for California Their first home was Sacramento county but they afterward moved several times and have lived in a number of counties in state Both were workers and though never attaining great wealth they had plenty and raised a large family and fitted them for the duties of life On August 1 1868 her husband was taken from her and after that time she lived with her son F B who tenderly cared for her during her old age She was the mother of eight children James J of Blacks Cynthia J Mrs Ben who died January 24 1877 Mary Mrs George who died April 18 1899 Dallas Mrs Frank of Elk Creek John W of Blanks Nancy Mrs J W Bow of Eureka Humboldt county diaries who died October 2 1880 and Edward of Blacks After the death of Charles Grandma and Edward took his two children Thomas and May home and they were added to those whom The Impress of her life will long remain a monument to her memory She lived her life openly fearlessly and faced all issues squarely She has fought His fight she has kept the faith She boa fed the hungry helped the needy and cared for the widow and orphan She had often said she was to go when the call should come and when It did come she met It fearlessly though conscious to the last Her reward is sure but we will miss her cheery presence though we feel our loss is her eternal gain She always thought of others before her self and almost the last words she said In the midst of her last great suffering was an inquiry for her great grandson little Elwyn Hulbert whom she loved so well and whom she knew to be Somewhere on the other side she greets them who have gone before and awaits them who are to come Joyful will the meeting be ===================================================================
