Biography

Margaret Rice was born in 1542 in the village of Bures St. Mary on the Suffolk/Essex border in eastern England. Her parents are not known at this point but she was of the yeoman, independent landowners, strata of society.
Margaret Rice married Thomas Cooke I, of the neighboring village of Pebmarsh, Essex, in 1563, in Bures St. Mary. She was 21 years old and her husband was 22 years old. The couple set up housekeeping in Pebmarsh. In 1564 they were blessed with the arrival of their first child, a son, Thomas Cooke II. Alas, Thomas was less than three years old when Margaret died, most-likely during childbirth or a miscarriage, in 1567.
