Birth

Thomas Cooke II (called "Thomas Cooke, the Younger") was born in 1564 in Pebmarsh, Essex, England. He was the oldest son of Thomas Cook, "the Elder," and his first wife, Margaret Rice (1542-1568), who died when young Thomas was still a small boy. His father's family and that of his mother were important independent land-owners in Essex, north-east of London. They were distantly related to the more-prominent Cooke family of Little Stambridge Hall, Essex, about 30 miles away.

Marriage

In 1603, when he was 40 years old, Thomas married Grace Upcher (aka Upshur), about 20 years younger (b. 1580), from the nearby village of Fordham, Essex. Her father was a yeoman farmer named Joseph Upcher[1] and she had an uncle who was a noted cleric in the Church of England at Fordham and London.

Thomas and Grace (Upcher) Cooke had four children:[2]

  1. Colonel Thomas COOKE, Esq., born 1604; m(1). Elizabeth DUKE 1630 in Pebmarsh - 4 surviving children; m(2). Judith ST JOHN (Widow Percival) 1645 in Essex and died Nov 1682 in Pebmarsh, Essex.
  2. Grace COOKE, born 1606; m. John BENNETT 1632 in Great Yealdham, Essex - 2 children; died after 1641 in Great Yealdham.
  3. Joseph COOKE, born 1608; emigrated to Cambridge MA ca. 1635; m. Elizabeth HAYNES 1642 in MA - 1 daughter; died May 1699 in Pebmarsh, Essex
  4. Colonel George COOKE, born 1610; emigrated to Cambridge MA ca. 1635; m. Anne [??] - 4 children; died April 1652 (fighting in Ireland = British Army); he was Governor of Wexford, Ireland, under Cromwell(1650-52) .

After his wife Grace died in about 1616, Thomas Cooke, the Younger, married a second time to a local widow, Susan [Robins ??], in about 1617, in Great Yealdham, Essex. They had no children together and lived in Great Yealdham.

Thomas Cooke II died at Great Yealdham, Essex, England, in February 1639. His Will, written September 17, 1638, was proven on February 8, 1639. He named his son Thomas and son-in-law John Bennett as Executors. Here is the transcript:[3]
