Margaret Dudley was born about 1637 in Boston, Mass., the daughter of Rev Samuel Dudley who was the son of Gov. Thomas Dudley and Mary Winthrop who was the daughter of Gov John Winthrop. She was evidently the mother of Sarah Dudley, the illegitimate daughter of Francis Pafat. The arguments in favor of this connection and subsequent geneaology are carefully delineated in Penobscot Pioneers Vol. 2.
