About Margaret "Fishy" "Peg" Geraldine Fletcher

Margaret Fish Fletcher Birth: Aug. 24, 1901 Death: Nov. 26, 1971

Born to Mary Pearl Brookings in Newburyport, Massachusetts, Margaret's birth name was "Georgie Geraldine Brookings". Her name was changed to Margaret Fish when she was adopted from the "Home for Little Wanderers" in Boston by Charles and Angie Fish when she was 9 months old.

Margaret grew up in Amherst, Massachusetts. At an early age she joined the First Baptist Church and served as a Sunday School teacher and sang in the choir. She was very talented musically, playing the piano and singing soprano solos. (She later learned to play the organ.)

Margaret also had ability as a public speaker - winning a gold medal in a W.C.T.U. oratory contest and also made up speeches for the Liberty Bond drives during WW I, when she was a high school student. Her talent for writing was shown through the years in the long letters, or chronicles of her life experiences that she wrote to her family and friends.

After graduation from high school she worked for 2 years at the Univ. of Mass. in Amherst until her marriage, July 8, 1922 to Francis S. Fletcher, whom she met when he came to study at the University.

During the years that followed they lived in various places where Francis' studies and work took him: Massachusetts, West Virginia, Louisiana, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Texas. Two sons who died young and eight daughters were born to them. The daughters all had the opportunity for study and preparation for useful careers.

Everywhere they lived she and her husband were actively involved in church life. While they were living in Texas Francis died and a few months later she decided to move to San Diego, Calif. with a teenage daughter and a daughter with Down Syndrome. There, due to her interest in, and love for, retarded children (because of her own Judy)she took a number of girls into her home to care for them, something she did as few could have done. This meant a degree of self-sacrifice perhaps little realized by others, for in a way it cut her off from fellowship and things that she would have enjoyed otherwise. Now her sufferings are over and she has gone to be with loved ones gone before - and to meet her Savior whom she served so faithfully.
