To Susan Newton Farrand from Louise Mackie Pacetti Dear Sue, Returned home last Thursday and have been impatient ever s ince to get a few lines off to you. I was in Bryan [Texas] with George a nd Willie Lee for several days and we visited the Batts - I was given add resses of two Willman granddaughters-in-law, who know the family histor y better than the Batts - however, I did learn a bit more. Margaret an d Phillip had only seven children (listed on separate sheet) and the Batt s had never heard of a "Peter." In looking over the copy of the record s you sent me, George {Newton] made quite a discovery! Have you notice d that Margaret and Earnest were married in 1859, and one year later, i n 1860, little Peter Willman is listed in the census as being 3 1/2 year s old? Do you suppose Earnest had been married before? Since the Batt s had never heard of a "Peter" it could possibly be his grave in Natchez . The Batts had never heard of Margaret having other brother than Jo hn Mackie. Also, they say she lived with brother John, in his home in Na tchez, for two years after coming to U.S. - they had never heard of Rodne y. They still have the two gold pieces she brought from Scotland. She c ame to U.S. at the age of 16 (would be 1850) - was tall woman, 5'9" tall , very handsome - had a will of iron. Earnest Willman had sawmill near N atchez - yankees burned it - he also served in the war - their home was b urned in Natchez by the yankees too - however, Margaret literally whippe d the yankee captain into making his men move her furniture out of the ho use before burning it! She didn't lose a single piece! Margaret spoke o nly Gaelic when she came to U.S. - Mary, her daughter, also learned Gaeli c - Mary was sent to Natchez to shcool. The Batts knew nothing about Mar garet's parents, had never heard of her mother being in U.S. - do you sup pose the mother was only on a visit and later returned to Scotland? Th e Batts still take a Natchez daily paper - a carry over from when Mary wa s living, I suppose. The Willman's seven children are all dead but eac h child had a family - Dad said Grandpa John spoke with a heavy brog ue - called Dad "Tume tee" - called Hiram "I - ee." Dad was his favorit e 'cause he was "all Mackie" - called Hiram a "Winters." Grandpa, over G randma Belle's protests, named Dad for a very dear friend, Tom Drake. Wh ile visiting Grandpa once, Tom Drake's horse reared and fell on him, brea king his leg - Grandpa kept him at his house and cared for him til his le g healed. Mr. Batts gave me the names of two granddaughters-in-law o f Margaret's, to write for infomration - I give them to you in case - Mrs . H. G. Rhodes, 417 Naples, Corpus Christi, Texas, and Mrs. George Cona n Willman, Lagrange, Texas. I will get letters off to them this week . Notice that of Margaret's five sons she gave two the names of he r brothers, and on her husband's name - surely one of the other names wou l be for her father - ?? The name "Maggie,' given one daughter, was NO T short for Margaret - she was actually named Maggie. Will let you kno w anything I hear from the two granddaughters-in-law - About sixty o r so feet from the Willman burial lot in Bryan [Texas] is a lot owned b y a 'Winter" family. On one grave stone is the name "Will er" - strange , isn't it?? Do hope you can visit in Bryan in December - you've me t George and Willie Lee. She is a lovely person - expecting their thir d child in February - asked me to tell you to "drop in' if possible in De cember - All for now - Love, Louise - P.S. Dad had virus while I wa s there - much better when I left - was 83 years old November 11th. Magg ie's grave stone lists birth year as 1874, same as Mary's - this is erro r - Batts said she was 3 or 4 years older than Mary - all names, other th an Batts, I copied from grave stones - all Willman children hav living ch ildren - hope to get complete list from granddaughters-in-law.
