John Mackie's middle name may not be Stewart as has been thought. This needs to be researched. Sue Newton Farrand gave Claudia Sue Newton the Mackie family clock for her wedding to Ken Wright with the following story attached: "Mackie Clock, History for Claudia Sue Newton" "The history of the clock is, John (born 1831), or Margaret Ann McKenzie , b. 1800 in Far Far Aberdeenshire, Scotland, widow of John Mackie born 1799, in Aberdeen, Scotland, came to Mississippi via Jamaica and New Orleans, bringing the clock and other family things." "John Mackie and his bride Jessie Stewart came with John’s brothers Robert and James (they could have brought the clock) but it is more likely that Margaret MacKenzie Mackie, the mother, brought it when she came later in 1858 with her daughter Margaret Ann Mackie." "It might have been with John Mackie, as Alice his daughter got it from her. Mother Arabella Phebe Winters who married John Mackie as his second wife." "When Alice was thinking of horse and rider, which was always on top of t he clock as long as Sue [Farrand] remembered it. The rider and horse w e have tried to trace, but could not find. Mackie [Claude Mackie Newton , Alice’s son] “artist-potter’ has agreed to reproduce a horse for th e clock to replace the original." "The clock went to Henry’s home in Baltimore and on having it repaired h e found the clock was made in U.S.A. - Connecticut. Henry put the clock in Sue’s care. Sue wrote to Conn. [Connecticut] to the clock [company ] and was elated to find from 1850 to 1880’s clocks were made in Connecticut for export to Scotland, so Alice was right, it did come from Scotland ." "Soon after Sue had the clock from Henry, its owner, Claudia Sue announced her coming marriage - Now, what a great family antique to put in her ca re for posterity, and so C. Sue has the Clock in good running order to preserve for posterity." "By Sun N. Farrand"

Mackie Family Reunion in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, told to Linda by Thomas Sterling Mackie, Jr. Linda took the above notes from a conversation. John Mackie died at his home near Mt. Pleasant on Cole's Creek out of Lorman, Mississippi. He had been sick and had purchased medication at a nearby store and Thomas Sterling has the receipts for that purchase. He said that the creek had swollen so much from recent rains that John Mackie's two youngest sons, who lived with him, could not cross to get to him in order to bury him. When John died, a black man went for the coroner , but it took about four days to return with the coroner and a wagon. Thomas Sterling assumes that John was buried right there at his home. He also said that a man named Dennis White lived nearby years ago and his descendants still live there today.

Patricia Farrand Overton Our most recent emigrant ancestor is John Stewart Mackie, who came from S cotland at the time of the Enclosure Laws. He landed in New Orleans, cam e upriver to Rodney, MS, which was a busy port until the river moved away , married the prettiest girl in town, fought in the Civil War, was wounde d and took to drink for the pain, wandered upriver again and disappeared . The Mackie Family Reunion was begun by Sue Newton Farrand and her cousi n, Elma Foster, in an unsuccessful attempt to locate his gravesite.
