About Margaret Menge

For marriage date and place, see: http://books.google.de/books?id=UiEYAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA524&lpg=PA524&dq=...

Margaret Smart was born in Tain, Ross-shire, Scotland.

To gain a better understanding of how it came about that three of Hugh and Margaret Smart's daughters travelled to India as missionaries or missionary wives, it is helpful to consider that the famous Presbyterian Church of Scotland minister, Angus Macintosh, was minister of Tain from 1797 until his death in 1831. He was apparently a highly praised and inspiring preacher and pastor. See the website http://www.fpchurch.org.uk/publications/the-free-presbyterian-magaz.... One of his sons went to India as a missionary.

The LMS missionary John Campbell (b 1804, Bengal service 1833-46) has always been overshadowed by his high profile contemporary Alexander Duff. He was a graduate of the University of Aberdeen who was equally gifted in the classroom, but was also a fluent Bengal speaker, ably supported by his wife, and by his sister-in-law, Miss Smart, who ran a parallel institution for girls. He had to fight the LMS every inch of the way to establish the Bhowanipore Institution in 1837...

Margaret Smart had already moved to India, to work together with her married sister Alexandrina Campbell in Bhowanipore, before she met her husband-to-be John Philipp Menge.

She had made her way to India on the bark ‘Arab’ one of seven passengers leaving on June 13th 1836 from the anchorage of The Downs, by the Kent coast, and arriving at Calcutta on September 30th.

This describes more fully the role of Alexandrina Campbell and her sister Margaret Smart.

The digital version of THE MORNING POST, 2 AUG 1841 reports Marriage of John Philipp Menge, of the Church Missionary Society, to Margaret, third daughter of Mr. H. Smart, county of Ross, N.B. At Calcutta, at St. John's Cathedral, by the Rev. H Fisher.
