About Margaret Merryman
Margaret Lane, a daughter of Dutton Lane and Pretitia Tydings, was born about 1703 in either Anne Arundel or Baltimore County, Maryland. She was named in the will of her father, receiving a tract of land called "Hamton (Hampton) Court", along with her sister, Sarah. She married William Merryman about 1725.
William and Margaret were the parents of the following children whose births were recorded in St. Paul's Parish:
1 Jemima b.24 Nov 1726 d. 13 Aug 1736
2 Margaret b. 24 Feb 1727/28 d. 5 Aug 1736
3 William b. 11 Apr 1729
4 George b. 25 Oct 1734
5 Joanna b. 15 Oct 1736
6 Chloe b. 28 Feb 1741 [1]
On 14 Feb 1733/34, "Hampton Court" was granted to William Merryman and his wife, Margaret, and Robert Sweeting and his wife, Sarah, as per the instructions of Dutton's proved will. It wasn't until two years later on 14 Feb 1735/36 that the two couples were granted a patent for "Hampton Court." William and Margaret sold their 50-acre share of "Hampton Court" to James Boreing by an indenture dated 30 Aug 1740. Then all three together sold their part to Charles Ridgely on 11 July 1746. Perhaps James hadn't completely paid off the indenture yet.
The exact date of death of Margaret Lane Merryman is not known, but she was alive on 5 May 1750 when she appeared before two justices of the peace for Baltimore County regarding the sale of a tract of land called "Merrymans Grotto." According to the deed of sale, "And at the same Time came Margeret Merryman wife of the said Wm. Merryman who being parted and privately examined out of the hearing of her husband did consent that her consent was volontary [sic] and without constrant [sic] of her husband."[2]
