Genealogy Proposed by Genealogics

John Stewart, 1st Earl of Lennox. (b. bef. 1430, d. 8 Jul/11 Sep 1495) Was created Lord Darnley and Earl of Lennox. Stewart was the son of Catherine Seton and Sir Alan Stuart, a grandson of Alexander Stewart, 4th High Steward of Scotland.

His marriage has been a source of genealogical confusion. He is recorded as having on 15 May 1438 contracted to marry Margaret, the daughter of Alexander Montgomerie, 1st Lord Montgomerie, and Margaret Boyd, by indenture as both parties were underage. She however appears to have deceased young. However, ultimately he married in 1460 Margaret Montgomerie, who was not the same individual, but her fraternal niece, daughter of Alexander, Master of Montgomerie, by his wife Elizabeth Hepburn.

They (earl John and the younger Margaret Montgomerie) had eight children:

Lady Marion Stuart.

Robert Stuart, 4th Seigneur d'Aubigny, b. c. 1470, d. 1543.

Sir John Stewart, Seigneur d'Oison, b. bef. 1446, d. c. 1512.

Elizabeth Stuart, b. bef. 1476.

Matthew Stewart, 2nd Earl of Lennox, b. bef. 5 May 1488, d. 9 Sep 1513, Flodden.

Sir William Stewart, Seigneur d'Oison, b. bef. 1495, d. bef. 1504.

Alexander Stewart, b. bef. 1495, d. bef. 1509.

Lady Elizabeth Stewart, b. bef. 1495.

Since John and Margaret were too young to marry in 1438, he was 10 and she was 4, they were married by their parents in what was called "Indenture". At this time Margaret's name became Stewart (Stuart) Later they were man and wife and had eight children together.
