About Margaret Ann Prothero, Free Settler "Premier" 1840

Margaret's family arrived in NSW on the "Premier" 1 July 1840.

Her father Robert , son of a farmer, was a Cotton Weaver and of the Protestant religion.

Robert (39), his wife Bridget (35), and children Alice (25), WIlliam (19), Emily (17), Robert (16), Nelson (14), Joseph (10), Emily (6), and Margaret (4).

They were "Bounty Immigrants" to New South Wales from Monasterevan, Co. Kildare, Ireland.

However, there is a also document (attached to sister Emily's profile as a Source) which clearly describes her as the daughter of Robert and Bridget on board the same ship, but which describes Emily as a 17yo single woman, a Child's md. by occupation, and of the Protestant religion. It also says she is sister to Alice and William.

I believe this discrepancy has occurred as Emily would have been 16 years at embarkation, and therefore listed as a child (above as "6" years, not 16). Having turned 17 years en voyage, she is now entered on immigration in NSW as a single young woman, hence her own separate entry as for her older siblings, Alice and William. Therefore, I have made this Emily's main profile, while still putting a profile for an Emily that would have been 6 years old in 1840.

Published in "The Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser" of Tuesday 19 May 1864: "MR8. DECIMUS PROTHERO (Margt. Ann Sherwood) is urgently requested to COMMUNICATE with C. W. MARSH, Esq. Salisbury Court, New England, or her BROTHER JOSEPH, at Clarevaulx, Glen Innes, from whom she will hear of something to her advantage, Letters for you at the West Maitland Post Office. 2912"
