About Margaret Sharp Chalmers

Margaret Bethune was born before 1738, the daughter and eventual heiress of John Bethune of Blebo and his wife Janet Scrymgeour. In late 1770 or very early 1771 she met William Sharp, a General in the Portuguese Army who was on leave in his birthplace of St Andrews. After he had returned to his duties in Portugal, she gave birth to a son Alexander Bethune, who used his mother's name of Bethune because his parents had never married. After the death of William Sharp, she married a lawyer, William Chalmers, but had no further children. She died in 1791, leaving Chalmers in possession of the ancestral estate of Blebo and her son Alexander landless.
