About Margaret Ann Shook
Margaret Ann Shields was the daughter of John Shields and Mary Ann Shook Shields. She was their only child. She married William Henry Shook about 1864 in Tennessee, after William Henry returned from fighting in the Civil War for the Confederacy.
Together they had 13 children. They eventually migrated from Tennessee to Texas. Margaret had a stroke and when the family could no longer care for her, they were forced to place her in what was then called the Texas Hospital for the Mentally Insane, in San Antonio, Texas. She was only there for only a short time, when she contracted pneumonia and died. The family was unable to afford to come get her body, so she was buried on the grounds of the Hospital.
