About Margaret Stewart
MARGARET RUTHVEN
Margaret Ruthven, here treated, is the daughter of William Ruthven, 1st Lord Ruthven and his wife Isabel Levington She was: "contracted as a child to John Oliphant, grandson and heir apparent of Lawrence, first Lord Oliphant, but in June 1494 a notarial instrument was taken showing that the marriage was not solemnised owing to the bride's reluctance. She was married, first, to Alexander, Earl of Buchan; secondly, to John Erskine, younger of Dun, who fell at Flodden; thirdly, before 23 December 1518, to James Stewart of Ryland, who was slain at Edinburgh before 11 March 1524-25; fourthly, to William Wood of Bonnyton, which marriage was annulled 18 December 1534".
