John Stretton married Ellen Hill on 18 October 1566 in Tamworth, St Editha, Staffordshire, England. assuming John was aged 21 at the time of his marriage (probably an underestimate) that would suggest he was born around 1545, probably in Tamworth,[1]

John and Ellen had at least two children:

1. Winnfride born in 1567
2. Richard born about 1569.

John’s wife Ellen may have died soon after the birth of Richard (although no burial record has been found), as another marriage is recorded for John Stretton on the 21 May 1570, John Stretton married Margaret Harte in Tamworth, St Editha, Staffordshire, England.[2]

Following the date of this second marriage, a further at least five children were born:

1. John Stretton (1575-)
2. Randall Stretton (1578-1578)
3. Margery Stretton (1578-)
4. George Stretton (1581-)
5. William Stretton (1585-1647)
6. a further daughter Elizabeth Stretton (aft.1566-1574) probably belongs to this second marriage.

John must have been reasonably well off financially, as at least three of his children, Richard, George and William were apprenticed in London (William being apprenticed to Richard).

We know from the marriage bond of his son George that John (of Tamworth) was a glover, this is also supported by the apprenticeship records in London for his three sons, Richard, George and John who were all apprenticed into the butchers guild in London and where their father’s profession of glover was also recorded[3]
