About Margaretta Whiteside Semple
Her father was probably William Whiteside (a farmer? born in 1746). Margaretta's first husband was William Thompson. They had three children named John, William, and Mary. The Thompsons immgrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Shortly after their arrival, William (Sr.) died. She then married John M. Semple (son of Samuel and Mary Semple) after 1790 in Philadelphia. John was born in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. He was a merchant in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Stubenville. Margaretta and John had seven children named Ann, Eliza (Mrs. Samuel Hair), Martha (Mrs. John D. Wheeler), Sarah, Margaret, Alexander W., and Jane Morton (Mrs. Gilbert M. Hair). Margaretta died in Kentucky while visiting her daughter, Martha." The book, "The Old and New Monongahela", by John S. Van Voorhis says that Margaretta's brother was Lord Chief Justice of Ireland James Whiteside (I think he was more likely her nephew). The book also claims that Margaretta's 2nd husband, John M. Semple, was a second cousin of King George III. John's sister, Mary Semple, was married to Admiral [Samuel?] Graves. The Admiral was a resident of Castledawson, Northern Ireland and connected with the royal family.
