About Marguerite R. Birch

Marguerite R. (Palmer) Birch was a 36-year-old victim of the Hartford Circus Fire, which broke out on July 6, 1944 and killed at least 167 people.

A native of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, Marguerite lived with her husband and two children at 132 Orange Street in Meriden, Connecticut. She was deeply involved in the Meriden community, where she had lived for 14 years. She was a Red Cross Nurse's Aide and taught courses for aspiring aides, led the American Women's Volunteer Service, was on the religious education board at First Congregational Church, was past matron of the Westwood court of the Order of the Amaranth, was a house committee member at the Masonic Temple, was an adviser of the Order of the Rainbow, and was involved with the Civil Air Patrol, amongst other activities. In St. Johnsbury, she had also been a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Marguerite was found deceased on the circus grounds on July 6, as were her son, Arland, and daughter, Shirley. The three had a joint funeral at First Congregational on July 9.
