Maria Bergman

Maria Henrika Bergman was born in Stockholm in 1874 at Valdemarsudde (Valdemars "peninsula"), a beautiful piece of land on the water in the Djurgården section of Stockholm. Her parents were of an orginally very wealthy family from the north. The Bergmans were involved in mainly in lumber and shipping but lost most of their wealth during the period when sailing ships were replaced by steamships. They almost went bankrupt and had to sell Valdemarsudde to Prince Eugen, the younger brother of King Oscar II. Prince Eugen eventually built a beautiful mansion there which is now a very nice museum and park (http://www.waldemarsudde.se/). Luckily the family had many friends and relatives who were ready to help them in their time of need. For example, Maria spent many years during her childhood in the household of Gösta Otta Boberg, her uncle, who had retired to Kevinge gård (manor) in Danderyd just outside Stockholm. Mr. Boberg founded the famous fashion house of Worth & Boberg in London and Paris in the eighteen-sixties.
