About Anders Olson
According to Tom Jahn:
Anders was born on Östanby (literally East Village) farm in 1862. For some unknown reason he took the name Olson rather than Olsson as his father was called. Anders was a "rebel" and "escaped" from home at the age of 15, lied about his age, and was taken on as a yeoman sailer aboard a full-rigged ship bound for England and, eventually, Australia. He was shipwrecked off Australia but he survived with a few of his mates. It took him over two years to get back to Sweden, where he made peace with his parents and went on to finish high school.
After some apprenticeships with some large steel companies, he decided to go into the steel business himself in partnership with a more experienced man named John Odelberg in 1884. The company, Odelberg & OIson (http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odelberg_&_Olson) grew rapidly and both men became very, very rich, buying up several other companies and steel and tool mills in Sweden and Finland. They sold their products all over the world, including the U.S.
In the meantime, Anders married Maria Henrika Bergman, who was born in Stockholm in 1874 at Valdemarsudde (Valdemars "peninsula"), a beautiful piece of land on the water in the Djurgården section of Stockholm (see Maria's profile!). Anders and Maria had two boys and four girls, one of them Birgitta Maria. The Olsons resided in a large townhouse on Karlavägen, a famous and fashionable residential street in Stockholm. During the summers, they lived in a beautiful old mansion outside of Stockholm called ?????.
In other words, they were quite comfortable and well known, and entertained a lot at the large house on Karlavägen. Anders owned a Rolls Royce, complete with chauffeur and a Packard. But, Anders was quite sickly (with asthma) and died at the age of 70 in 1832 in the midst of the worldwide Depression. Most of his wealth was lost (and the cars!); however, he had secured a reasonable pension for Maria, who surived him for another 30 years until 1952.
