About Maria Anna Mahler

The Geni record of Maria Anna Mahler was gently modified on 09 November 2016, to reflect the accurate date of her crossing into the next world. "Putzi", as her father, Gustav fondly referred to her, died of Scarlet Fever and Diphtheria at the family’s lakeside residence in Maiernigg, on 05 July 1907 (and not on the 12th of that month, as is not infrequently misreported).

Mahler’s beloved firstborn was initially buried not far from his summer residence where the child died; and on that sad day, her parents and younger sister fled the home, never to return again.

In the summer of 1909, Maria Anna Mahler's earthly remains were exhumed and reinterred at the Grinzinger friedhof in the northern district of what is (in the 21st century) a part of Vienna. There, Mahler himself requested to be laid to rest sharing his little one's burial place. He personally selected the plot at Grinzing, leaving instructions with his mother-in-law, Anna Moll-Schindler-Bergen that, upon his impending death, he wished “to share the final resting place of Putzi”. Following his death at Vienna on 18 May 1911, the esteemed composer's stipulation was carried out on 22nd May. Nothing was unusual about this procedure; as such arrangements were tradition in the 19th century. By example, Clara Schumann, the performing pianist and widow of composer, Robert Schumann, elected to, upon her death, share his funerary grounds. The same is true of Gustav Mahler's father and mother, who are buried together at the Jewish Cemetery in Iglau/Jihlava. As is well documented by an extensive list of his biographers, Mahler was an exceedingly private gentleman, preferring that the monument to mark his burial would bear only his name – including no dates, or other such details. Accordingly, no reference at all is made to the joint interment in Grinzing, of Mahler with his daughter, aside from documentation in the official friedhof record.
