Maria Elisabeth was born on Nov. 8, 1742 in Berks County, Pennsylvania, USA. She was the daughter of Hans Jacob Allwein (1719 – 1781) and KATRINA Allwein (1720-1790). We don't know her mother's maiden name. Maria Elizabeth married Joseph Obold (1742-1770) in 1763 at Berks County, Pennsylvania. Joseph and Maria were 21 years old. Joseph's dad was Joseph Obold 1719 – and his mom was Elizabeth Hausshalter Obold.
Joseph and Maria had 2 known children: Joseph Obold 1762 – 1824 and Elizabeth Rebecca Obold 1767 – 1842.
Joseph Obold was one of the trustees of St. Peter, the first Catholic Church, Reading, PA.
Joseph settled in Bern township, Berks county, prior to the organization of the county in 1752, and in 1759 paid a federal tax of eight pounds. His will is on record in Will Book 2, page 80, and was entered Nov. 30, 1770. From this fact and date we learn that he probably died the early part of November, 1770. His wife, Maria Elizabeth, survived him. From items in his will, we learn that he had children at the time of his death who were still under twenty-one years of age. He mentions his son Joseph, who obtained the homestead by paying seventy pounds to the other heirs and twenty pounds annually to his mother. The will was witnessed by Hieronymus Hemmig, Mathias Stoudt and Nicholas Holler. This ancestor's dad, Joseph Obold, was probably the same party who came to America on the ship, "Robert and Alice" which qualified at Philadelphia, Sept. 3, 1739, and on this same ship was one Mathew Onbolt, who was, very likely, a brother. In 1759, in Heidelberg township, lived one Sebastian Obold, who paid a federal tax of ten pounds. We have no record of any children, or that he was related to Joseph Obold, but it is probable that there was some relationship between them.
One of Joseph's & Maria's great grandchildren, Harold Obold was the proprietor of the popular "West End Hotel," was born Nov. 28, 1867, in Reading, Pa.
Maria became a widow in 1770 at the age of 28. Maria Elizabeth's 2nd marriage was to Philip Joseph Schmidt (1747-1808) on Jan. 22, 1771 in Berks County, Pennsylvania, USA.
Maria and Philip had the following 8 known children: Michael Schmidt; Anna Maria Schmidt; Philip J Schmidt; Catherine Schmidt; John Schmidt; Magdalen Schmidt; Elizabeth Schmidt and Susan Schmidt.
