He is the son of Earl Johan I (Jean I, † 1279), Earl of Loon, and his first wife Matilda by Julius († 1279), the daughter of Count Wilhelm IV of Julich (1207-1218) and Matilda of Limburg + 1234). It is half-brother of Johann II (Jean II) von Loon and Chiny (1270-1311).

Arnold is associated with Count Guy de Dampierre of Flanders . He participated in the Battle of Woeringen in 1288
