Age 87 years. Buried May 24, 1996.

On January 20, 1929, she married Max Truitt of Columbia, Missouri, the son of Mrs. Edward Thomas Truitt in the District of Columbia at the home of her father.
They were the parents of four children.

She was born in Paducah, Kentucky, where her father, Alben Barkley, was county attorney and a county court judge. After her father was elected to the House of Representatives in 1912, she moved with her family to the District of Columbia. In 1928, she graduated from Holton Arms School and attended the University of Wisconsin. In 1935, she returned to the District after living in Kentucky and St. Louis. Her father served in the House until 1927 and then the Senate, where he was Democratic leader from 1937 until he became Vice President in 1949. He was re-elected to the Senate in 1954 and served until his death in 1956.

She was active in her father's political life, campaigning in his 1938 and 1944 Senate races and in his successful run for the vice presidency in 1948. She attended at least five Democratic National Conventions. During her mother's illness and after her death in 1947, she acted as her father's official hostess until his remarriage in 1949 to a young widow, Mrs. Jane Hadley, who was born in 1911.

In 1929, she married Max O'Rell Truitt, who served as an attorney with Reconstruction Finance Corp. and as a Federal Maritime Commissioner before practicing law in the District. At the time of his death in 1956, he was a partner in the firm of Cummings, Truitt & Reeves, whose senior partner was former Attorney General Homer S. Cummings.

On May 18, 1996, she died of cancer at the Washington Home. Survivors included four sons: William [1933-2003] of Floyd, Virginia, Thomas [1935-2011] of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia and Max Jr. [1931-2014] and another son, both of the District of Columbia; 22 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
