Marian (Mae) Laughead

Marian (Mae) IRWIN3 was born on 5 Nov 1854 in Cloveneden, Loughgall, Co Armagh, Ireland. She died on 23 Jan 1944 in Gladwyne, PA. Her funeral was from the home of her son, John, at State Rd. in Gladwyne. Further services were from the Siloam Methodist Church in Boothwyn. She was buried in Boothwyn, PA (Siloam UM Church Cemetery). She immigrated to the United States as a young woman and worked as a nanny for the Lloyd family of Philadelphia.

She was one of the first of the Irwin children that immigrated to America and settled near Brandywine Summit, PA.

They eventually moved to the Laughead homestead on Bethel Rd in Booth's Corner. This farmhouse would become a haven for all of the Irwin that would follow from Ireland. They eventually sold this farm to their daughter, Rhoda, and her husband, Lawrence Hutton. They moved to another smaller farm on Laughead Ln (just off Bethel Rd) in Boothwyn, PA. Both of these farmhouses are still standing today. Eventually, John and Mae moved into the home of their son, John, in Gladwyn, PA. Mae loved reading, cooking and poetry. She knew many poems and Psalms that she could recite from memory.

Marian (Mae) IRWIN and John Oakey LAUGHEAD were married on 13 Aug 1879 in Philadelphia, PA (Haverford Ave Methodist Church). John Oakey LAUGHEAD was born on 13 Aug 1858 in Ireland. He was possible born in March. He died on 7 Jan 1939 in Gladwyne, PA. He was buried in Boothwyn, PA (Siloam UM Church Cemetery). His funeral was from his late residence (his son's home) in Gladwyne (Rev. A. J. Lawson was one of the officiating clergy). He was the son of William & Margaret Laughead.
