Marie A. Downey

Marie A. (Jackson) Downey was born in Canton, Massachusetts, on October 2, 1898. She was the daughter of the late Francis W. and Lavina (McKenna) Jackson.

She was raised in Brockton, Massachusetts, and moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts, upon her marriage to Attorney William S. Downey in 1924.

She was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church.

Mrs. Downey was a member of of the Catholic Women's Club, and the Guard of Honor Society at St. Lawrence Church. She was a graduate of Brockton High School.

When the United States entered World War I on April, 6, 1917, she enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and served as a yeoman first class at the Quincy Naval Yard until her discharge in 1920.

On Monday, June 11, 2001, Mrs. Downey died at Sacred Heart Home at the age of 102.

Marie is survived by daughters, Mary L. Downey and Dr. Anne Saunders; sons, Dr. William S. Downey Jr., and Attorney Maurice F. Downey; grandchildren, Teresa M. Downey, Patricia M. Downey, Kathleen M. Downey, Dennis M. Downey, Bernadette M. Senne, Richard T. Saunders Jr., David G. Downey, William S. Downey III, Marie A. Saunders, Jerome P. Downey, Margaret K. Hulsebosch, Atty. Andrew B. Saunders, Brian J. Downey, Paul C. Downey, Atty. Matthew J. Downey, Atty. Kevin I. Downey, Maureen L. O'Toole, Ellen L. Poyant, Atty. Gregory M. Downey, Michael A. Saunders, William H. Saunders, Atty. Christopher T. Saunders, and Maura L. Downey; 47 great-grandchildren; and 3 nieces and a nephew.

She is predeceased by her parents; husband; grandson, Martin P. Downey; brother, Francis W. Jackson Jr.; and sister, Mary E. Murphy.
