Notes (1) Marie Chalres Angelique was 1/2 Natchitoches Caddo Indian.
Louisiana Creole. In the classical sense, Angelique would have been classified as 'Louisiana Creole" Creole were born in the New World from Old World origins. This term was used to set apart those people, regardless of ethnic admixture, who were born in the New World from those born in Europe. The term "creole" was applied to slaves, livestock, and produce, as well as colonial citizens. It basically means "born in this place".
A more precise definition for the Ancestry of Marie Angelique would have been Métis (Mee-Tay) (French), or Mestico (Portuguese) or Mestizo (Spanish): - both terms were used to describe the children and descendants of American Indian and European unions. All variations merely meant of mixed Amerindian and European blood. In the early 20th century, Metis also assumed the meaning "mongrel' for those of mixed European and Amerindian blood lines.
