About Marie Bruneau

Marie was born in St.Paul, év. d' Orléans(Loiret), France, daughter of Antoine Prévost and Marie Penneau. She was a 'fille du Roi' or King's daughter, one of the 774 girls who were brought from France between the years of 1663 and 1673 to marry the colonists in New France. The french administration wanted to increase the population in the colony as the growth had been slow relative to the British colonies in America. The 'filles du Roi' are truly the mothers of the vast majority of all the people of French descent in Canada and the U.S. . 1669 was the best year, when 135 girls arrived. In the first years, girls from orphanages and widows were recruited. However, after 1666 or so, strong, healthy girls from villages were sought out because the administration wanted women who could work with their husbands and raise families in often very difficult conditions.
As a 'fille du Roi', Marie brought a dowry worth 250 livres (pounds) to the marriage, 50 of which was from the King. She was assisted at her wedding by Barbe de Boulogne 'protèctrice des filles du Roi' and Anne Gasnier.
In 1681, two years after François passed away, she married Jean Chauvet with whom she had four more children . When he in turn passed away Aug. 25, 1691, she was left a widow with seven children to feed. That November, she contracted her son François to three years as a domestic to François Truffaut. The contract reveals her goals. Not only did she assure food, lodging and clothing for François for three years, but for herself and the other children, she was allotted 4 bushels of wheat and a day's plowing at seeding time. As for François, after three years he left the employ of his master with the clothes on his back and a milk cow with calf as his salary.
