Marie C. Fontaine, 101, of Sanford, passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at her home in Sanford. She was born in Fort Kent, the youngest of 15 children on August 5, 1909, a daughter of the late Regis and Flavie (Long) Daigle. She attended St. Louis School in Fort Kent.

In 1935 she moved to Sanford to be with her sister. She was a communicant of St. Ignatius Church and member of the Ladies of St. Anne. For 15 years she was employed by the Betty Hartford Dress Shop in Sanford. A lifelong nurturer and communicator of not only her family but her extended family, in the 1970's she was instrumental in sponsoring and assisting with the relocation of Cambodians here in the Sanford/Springvale area.

She loved and was devoted to her grandchildren. She enjoyed sewing; she made all of her children's clothes. She also enjoyed baking and was famous for her apple pies.

She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Fontaine who passed away in 1981, a grandson, Richard Waltz who passed away in 2005, and all her siblings.

She is survived by her daughters, Rachel and her husband, Robert Iriana of Surprise, AZ, and her sons, Michael, Jeffrey and Aaron Vezeau; Phyllis Fontaine of Sanford and her daughters, Audrey and Rachel Waltz; Lucille Demers and her husband, Robert of Sanford and their daughters, Jennifer Strout and her husband, Carey, Rebecca Campbell and her husband, Timothy, Lauren and Karen Demers; three great grandchildren, John Strout, Derrick Vezeau, Tesla Campbell, a special niece with whom she had a lifelong relationship with, Yvette Daigle Bernard, as well as many other nieces and nephew.

Visiting hours for Mrs. Fontaine will be held on Sunday, March 13th from 7 to 9PM at the Lafrance Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street, Sanford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10AM at St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, Holy Family Church. Burial will be in the spring at St. Ignatius Cemetery.
