Marie Sophie Elisabeth Lange

LANGE. - October 27, Maria Sophia Elizabeth Lange, of Nelson, mother of the Brothers Sixtus, aged 75 years. Deceased was born on the 24th March, 1798, and her death is deeply lamented by her numerous family. Source: Colonist (28 October 1873, p. 3.).

When the German settlers from Moutere arrived back in Nelson conditions were difficult due to the financial state of the New Zealand Company. No employment could be found as too many absentee landowners still lived in England. Some of the German families went to live in the New Zealand Company barracks and a few of the German families became destitute. In time many of these German settlers travelled to Australia hoping to find a better life.

The LANGE and SEXTUS family left Nelson around 1844 and travelled to Australia. Later between 1855 and 1856 Marie LANGE and son’s by her first marriage the SEXTUS boys returned to New Zealand and settled in Nelson. The SEXTUS boys were naturalised twice, first in 1844 and second in 1856. Details of the family below were taken from the St Pauli passenger list.
