Marie Louisa Durant

Baptism: 10 Aug 1765, Church of the Immaculate Conception, Mobile, Entry #1a/0227. A child named Marie Louise, mulatresse, was baptized by Fr. Ferdinand, pretre capucin missionaire. She was born on 8 Aug 1765. No father is listed and the mother is simply recorded as "une esclave negresse" belonging to Msr Durand. Godparents were Jean Baptiste Marcellin and Francoise, une mulatresse libre.

Louise Durand/Durant was probably descended from the Durant family, early French colonists of the area. She most likely was the offspring of a male Durand and a slave. Birth records of her children list her as being a “free mulatto.”
