28 June 1545: Charter by which Mary, Queen of Scots, confirms to John McDowell of Garthland and his wife Mariote Campbell, possession of the four merk land of Portaspetill, the one merk land of Auchcort, the three merk land of Mydtoun of Lochanis, the one merk land of Tunbaa, and the one merk land of Dewchra, all of old extent, in the sheriffdom of Wigton. John McDowell of Garthland resigned these lands in order to obtain a new grant from the crown in favour of himself and his wife, and their male heirs, whom failing to John's nearest male heirs. 26 March 1566: Crown Precept from Chancery directed to Fergus Nylsone brother german to John Nylsone of Craigcaffie and to John Magdowgall of Knokincrosch sheriffs of Wigton in hac parte to infeft Mariota Campbell as one of the two heirs to her father the deceased Finlay Campbell of Corswell in the half of the 45 merkland of Corswell and the 2½ merkland of Mye, held in chief of the Crown; taking security for £37.10/- of fermes of ½ the said lands. 26 May 1569: Instrument of Sasine at the hand of Duncan McClellan N.P. narrating that Gilbert Agnew of Challoyct sheriff depute of Wigton in hac parte conform to Crown precept dated 12 April 1569, infeft Mariota Campbell as one of the two heirs of deceased Finlay Campbell of Corswell her father in the other half of the 10½ merklands as described above. Taking security for £47.5/- for the fermes of the said ½ of the lands which had been in hands of the Crown for 4 years and a term. 11 July 1576: Instrument of Sasine at hand of William Hegait N.P. narrating that John Campbell, brother of John Campbell in Logane, and Mariota Kennedy spouse of first named John, were infeft by George Kennedy of Balmaclanochan as bailie of Mariota Campbell lady Corswell with consent of John Kennedy of Ardmillan her spouse and of Uchtred McDowell of Garthland her son and heir apparent, in the 20/- land of Glengyre and 20/- land of Nether Carnboy in parish of Kirkcum, reserving liferent to the granter. Wit:- to precept were Hugh Campbell of Killocht younger, Gilbert McDowell in Balker and Alex. McDowell his son.- and to the sasine, - the said Hew Campbell, John Ross fiar of Drumgraing, John Ross in Carneboy and Thomas Ross there. 8 February 1580-81: Signet letters dispensing with all alienations of lands and barony of Corswell in parish of Kirkinner, sheriffdom of Wigtown, belonging to Marion Campbell, lady Corswell, and of lands and barony of Garthland in parish of Stonykirk, said sheriffdom, belonging to Uchtred McDowell of Garthland, elder, son of said Marion, he being in trouble due to deadly feud with his unspecified enemies, and sold to any person or persons in time bygone, and granting said Marion and Uchtred licence to make new alienations thereof to any person they please notwithstanding said lands are held ward and relief of the king. 25 January 1586-87: Charter by Mariota Campbell lady of Corswell one of the two heirs of the deceased Finlay Campbell of Corswell, to her son Uchtred McDowell of Garthland, of her half of the 45 merklands of Corswell and her half of the 10½ merklands of Arie, Knokbrek, Carnbrok and Ballingaun and the mill thereof in the parish of Kirkcum, and also her half of the 2½ merkland of Mye in the parish of Stanykirk and also the superiority of the 2½ merkland of Knoknane and ¼ part of the mill thereof being part of the 10 merkland of Brouchjarg in parish of Kirkcum; and also her half of the 15 merkland of Catbultie viz.:- 5 merkland of Ballingat, 5 merkland of Knoknarling and Dirsalloch and 5 merklands of Garlarg and Blakmark, and the superiority of the 10 merkland of Knokcreoch and Knoknaldin in the parish of Kells.To be held from the granter of the Crown, reserving liferent to the granter.
