About Marjorie Charteris

Marjory Charteris (also Marjorie Charteries) was the wife of Thomas Bruce, 1st Lord of Clackmannan. The date of their marriage is not recorded, it was sometime before 1348 when Marjory was recorded as his widow. Together they are the parents of: - Robert Bruce, 2nd of Clackmannan

It is not known when their son Robert was born. However in 1348 it was recorded that Marjory Cherteris, widow of Thomas 1st of Clackmannan, survived him and held terce (1/3) of the lands of Clackmannan. Their son Robert Bruce, 2nd of Clackmannan, was still a minor and was found at this time to be a ward of Sir Robert Erskine and John Monteith. Later in March 1359-60 an exchequer account audit, extending from Easter 1348 to 1359-60, showed that Thomas had been dead at least eleven years, and that his widow was then alive.

On 9 December 1359, Robert Bruce, 2nd of Clackmannan, was confirmed in his lands of Clackmannan in a charter from King David II, in which he is styled as cousin to the King. It may be that Marjory was dead at this time or it may simply be that Robert finally came into his majority (came of legal age).

It is not known when Marjory was born or her parentage. As Robert Erskine and John Monteith were both guardians of her son, it is possible she had a familial connection to one or both of those families.
