About Markgraf Mattias von Österreich

Matthias of Austria (* 1594; † November 1626 in Vienna, buried in the Franciscan monastery), also called Don Matthias, married to an unknown Sicilian. After the death of his father he lived with his brother Karl in Graz and later chose a military career (defense of Gradisca in the Venetian War, in Budweis he fought under the command of Field Marshal Boucquoi).

Here is a postscript to the earlier discussion of Habsburg bastards. N.B. that the remains no evidence of ANY after 1618 or before 1800.

"Emperor Rudolf II (1552-1612), who never married, had 6 illegitimate children, all titled Markgraf or Markgraefin of Austria: Dorothea (a nun), Elizabeth (a nun), Karl (a soldier), Julius (born about 1586) Herr von Krummau who became insane and died 1609 at Krummau. The last two were by Euphemia von Rosenthal: Matthias who, in 1608, hoped to become a Cardinal; he didn't, joined the army and in 1618 married a "Sicilian princess", died in Germany in 1626. Charlotte died in Mechelen (now in Belgium) in 1662; in 1608 she married Francois Thomas d'Oizelet, Comte de Cantecroy. Joanna Galea married 1609 Valletta to Don Giovanni Mattias di Österreich, (created Knight of the Holy Roman Empire) (d. 1626 Wien), [genealogy], (illegitimate son of RUDOLF II, Holy Roman Emperor and Euphemia von Rosenthal), with issue . Donna Imperia di Österreich, 1624: Baroness von Rosenthal, married 1617 Palermo, Sicily to Vincenzo de Licata, married (2) 1625 Birkirkara to Salvatore Micallef, with issue.
