About Markus Marx Mordechai Wolff
Markus Wolff’s is one of the oldest tombstones in Bad Münstereifel. His tombstone reads (in Hebrew): Here lies Rabbi Mordechai Ha-Levi Ben Rav Itshak, died 637. (This is the Hebrew year, without the millennium number, similar to us saying that this year is ‘15.) This is the learned Markus Wolff from Gemuend 1793-1877. (Symbol-Butterfly). He was a “kleinhandler”, which I believe was a merchant of small items. Markus was married twice – first to Tauba Levy, with whom he had four children. Tauba died at the age of 27. He then married Johanna Steinberg, known as “the Goldene Hanna”. Johanna was the daughter of Marx Eliezer (1755-1843) of Glies and Agathe Wolff of Niederbreisig, and the granddaughter of Heyman Loeb and Hannchen Jacob. Markus had another six children with Johanna.
