Marshal Crites was the son of John and Margaret (Skidmore) Crites, of Braxton County, (West) Virginia. He married Serena Crites and fathered two children before enlisting to serve in as Private in Co. K, 1 W.Va Cav. He died at Charleston, Kanawha County, WV, and was reinterred 11 Dec 1867 to the National Cemetery, Grafton, Taylor Co., WV, site 795. Children: Oliver (b. 24 Oct 1854) and Alice (b. 1860) Crites.
