There are no records to indicate whether they may have met in England, or how and when they each travelled to the Cape. Whilst they were both living on the fringes of London during at least some overlapping years - he as a gunner in the Royal Artillery, located at Woolwich, and she living in Hounslow - these locations are not close. There is an army barracks at Hounslow, but no record of Royal Artillery ever being housed there.
So at this point it is assumed that Martha travelled to the Cape alone.

Record of death and burial at St Peter's Cemetery at Observatory, Cape Town, along with son Thomas (the only Bashforth names recorded thus far) on this site (login needed):

The record mentions that she was from Hounslow, and that she died at Combrink Street. Buried in grave E3a on plot 6O-U-5/6 (same as Thomas).
