About Martha Alice Cole

Martha was the daughter of Lewis Hutchens and Sarah Jackson. She married Edgar Cole on 30 March 1887 in Buena Vista Co, Iowa. They were the parents of Mildred, Clifford, and Hazel.

November 27, 1903 - Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - Mrs. E.J. Cole, of Grant township, after a lingering illness of several months died Monday, Nov. 23, 1903, at the home of Mrs. L.G. Malbone, of this city. The latter being a professional nurse Mrs. Cole was placed in her care about eight weeks ago, at which time she underwent a trying surgical operation, which did not seem to in any manner deter the seriousness of her illness.

Despite everything that could be done by skillful and loving hands she passed away, leaving behind a kind and devoted husband, with three small children: Mildred, aged 14, Edward 12 and Hazel 5, to mourn the loss of their best earthly friend.

The funeral services were held at the M.E. church in this city Wednesday, at 11 a.m. Rev. W.J. Carr officiating. And her remains were gently borne to their final resting place, in Storm Lakes beautiful necropolis.

The death of this estimable lady is indeed a sad one, she had in fact, but reached the meridian of life's journey, being surrounded by every environment, which tends to make a happy life, a pleasant home, a devoted husband and a family of children to whom the word mother was a charm and solace. Her love for home and friends was marked and masterful, it dominated her whole life and gave it much of its luster, possessed as she was with a gentle disposition, a clear intellect, a pure generous heart, she had all the elements of superiority, she was dignified as a queen, yet gentle as a child, she had the strength of heart of the oak, yet the modesty of the violet, in her bearing she was universally affable and courteous.

The presence of such a woman in a community is an abiding benediction, the loss sustained by a community in the death of such a woman is not to be estimated in thought much less expressed in words. She was a consistent Christian in the highest sense of the word, exemplifying in her daily life the teachings of Him, who creates and controls the lives, and destinies of nations and men, and her hope of Christ as her personal Savior never waned. But Death is no respecter of persons in his quiver. He has arrow for all the young and old, the high and the low, the rich and the poor alike, but we attempt no philosophy of life and death, our loved and honored friend has gone from our midst forever, peace to her ashes, consolation to her friends and loved ones, sweet flowers for her tomb, and may happy memories ever linger around the name of Mrs. Martha Hutchens Cole.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Sep 21 2022, 17:00:27 UTC
