The Heady family were Patriots during the Revolution, and Martha's brother James served as a Soldier. Her father and brother both named Thomas signed Oaths of Allegiance in petition by Thomas Gaddis, under whom her brother served in the Virginia Militia. Her brother and father also signed petition along with Mr. Gaddis to create a new state "Westylvania" which was ignored by the state legislature.
Martha and John were married November 19, 1769 in Fayette City, Fayette, Pennsylvania. The couple moved west to within 15 miles of Wheeling. They settled on 10 mile creek. The area was considered to be Augusta County Virginia, and Washington County Pennsylvania at that time. John had Militia duty on the Frontier there in 1781 through 1785. The Heady and Goodwine families moved to Kentucky in 1788.
The Goodwines settled near the Salt River in Spencer County, and the Headys on Cox's Creek in Nelson County. Her father died in 1804, and she was named in his Will as Martha Goodin. In 1810 John filed a notice in the Bardstown newspaper that Martha had left him and he would not honor her debts. They were likely never reconciled as John's Will noted he had left money for Martha's care in the hands of James Heady. She was not to inherit any division of his assets. The children of John and Martha were named in a deed as follows: Lydia Burch, Thomas, Seth, William, John, James of Warren Indiana, Elizabeth, Rebeckah, Abner, Elias and Heady Goodwine.
